Company Information

Howard and Julie Haimsohn
Lawrance Furniture was founded in 1937 by Sadie & Herman Haimsohn. A thriving general furniture and appliance store evolved over the next 40 years into the leading modern and contemporary furniture store south of Los Angeles.
Back in the 1930’s relationships and customer service were essential to any business. Ed Haimsohn, son of Sadie and Herman carried on that understanding of a great customer experience. It was Ed who, through his vision and personal passion for great modern design took the company and evolved it into a specialized showroom, offering great furniture and accessories by the best contemporary designers and producers from around the world. lawrance.comRetailing of Modern and Contemporary design in home furnishings is uniquely exciting and challenging. Like any business, it requires a passion and a commitment from the owners and everyone in the organization. Providing good customer service is not enough. The entire experience, from the moment people walk through our doors until long after the delivery has occurred, must be great. At Lawrance, our goal is to make the entire process of purchasing home furnishings enjoyable.
Lawrance is a family business. And, while we have grown into a larger organization than we were back in the 1930’s, we still try to behave like a small family business. All employees at Lawrance are part of this family. We pride ourselves on having many employees stay until retirement. If you get a chance, stop in our Encinitas showroom and talk to Elaine Doddridge or Ben Conte. Both Elaine and Ben have been assisting our customers for almost 30 years.
Lawrance Contemporary Home Furnishings is also all about the furniture, the accessories, the area rugs and the lighting. Lawrance buyers are highly critical of everything they offer in the showrooms. Lawrance shops the major shows in the United States, Europe and Asia. It is not just about “what we can sell”. It is about “what we can be proud to offer”. While price is important, we look first at the design, the integrity of the design and construction. We try to select merchandise from suppliers that we believe have similar values to ours. Comfort and function are important aspects of any great design. And, if we can put a smile on your face while showing you something unique, even better.
We also want our showrooms to help create ideas and inspiration for your home. We know that a well planned home environment can help create years of enjoyment for our clients and their families and friends. We are constantly changing the look of our stores. While we know that we are in a fashion business and we must keep up with new designs and colors and finishes, we are equally conscious of long term value. An emphasis on both quality and design has always been critical elements in our selection process. We want you to enjoy your new home furnishings for years and years.
Today, Lawrance has 2 showrooms serving all of San Diego and Southern California. Howard Haimsohn, son of Ed Haimsohn along with Julie Haimsohn continue the tradition of offering great contemporary home furnishings in an atmosphere that is comfortable and fun. At Lawrance, we pride ourselves on creating repeat customers. There is no greater pleasure than hearing someone say “my parents always shop here and they told me to see you”. Come visit us. Company History
Lawrance Furniture was founded by Sadie and Herman Haimsohn in 1937. It was a very different time in 1937. The Haimsohn’s had sold their small grocery business on Coronado Island and were thinking of retirement. But, retirement didn’t really suit them, so along with a partner, Herman began a furniture and appliance business in downtown San Diego. Four years later, the partner was bought out. Back in those days, the company was called Modern Furniture Company. In the 1950’s, Ed Haimsohn, Sadie and Herman’s son, began to move the company away from a general furniture store into a Modern Furniture specialty store.
Ed Haimsohn was a true pioneer and entrepreneur. With no other stores specializing in a design niche, Modern Furniture Company quickly became the destination for San Diegans interested in modern and contemporary home furnishings designs.
In 1976, the third generation, Ed’s son Howard Haimsohn joined the company. Howard was recently married and still in college working toward a degree in marketing. Over the next couple of years, Howard spent time learning every aspect of the business.
In 1981 a second showroom, in North County’s Encinitas, was added to serve the growing population that appreciated good contemporary design. A recent marketing research study indicated that the name of the business, Modern Furniture Company was not consistent with the perceptions of design that people held for the company. Through much detailed research and analysis, the Haimsohn’s decided to change the name of the business to Lawrance Contemporary Home Furnishings. Lawrance is Howard’s middle name, although spelled differently.
In 1983, Ed and Howard Haimsohn created the Contemporary Design Group, CDG. By creating the opportunity and venues for sharing of ideas and information with other talented contemporary furniture retailers, Lawrance was able to grow their business and improve their customer service and product offerings.
In 1986 Ed Haimsohn promoted Howard to President of the company. Howard thus became the 3rd generation of Haimsohn’s to lead Lawrance.
In 1995 Lawrance launched the company website
www.lawrance.com As the internet grew, lawrance continued to revise and update the website.
Today Lawrance Furniture has been serving San Diego County for 73 years. Today, Lawrance is more committed than ever to providing their customers with the most complete collection of Modern and Contemporary Home Furnishings. We are fortunate to have several of our best suppliers producing outstanding designs right here in Southern California. By buying local, we help provide jobs and a better way of life for hundreds of families that live nearby.
