Company Information

Decorum was begun in the Ghent section of Norfolk in the early 1970s. Originating in a city that began in the 1600s, you would be correct in thinking that traditional “Williamsburg-inspired” furnishings were the preferred choice for residences in such an historic city. But the lure of something different and a crisp and clean contemporary style proved to be a genuine success. In the mid-1980s, owners Vernon Middleton and Claus Ihlemann decided that remaking the local furniture market wasn’t enough, and proceeded to remodel some older abandoned buildings at the west end of 21st Street in Norfolk. The Palace Shops became the new home to Decorum, as well as 25 other retailers who bet on the revival of this retail corridor. Their early success spawned new development that has become the citywide roadmap to urban revitalization. A Virginia Beach store was added in the early 1990s to serve the state’s largest city. Today, Decorum employs a host of administrators, managers, sales associates, designers, installers and delivery drivers. Delivery Service

Decorum will help you to the fullest when making a new addition to your home. We operate with our own trucks and our delivery teams are professional, courteous, and fully qualified. Delivery times operate within two windows during the day. Choose between 10am-2pm or 1pm-4pm. And as an additional courtesy, one of our team members will call you 30 minutes prior to their arrival. Upon arrival at your home, our teams will assemble all merchandise in your home, where you need it, and remove all shipping, packing and building materials.

Decorum strives to provide the most effective way in getting your new furniture in your home, set up and ready to use. Some items come fully assembled, some require minor assembly, and others may require full assembly. We attempt to pay the utmost attention so that you may get your purchase in the most cost effective manner. Items that require assembly come with detailed instructions and essential tools required (although you may want to have a screwdriver on hand).

Deliveries are provided to the Hampton Roads community and many surrounding areas on Decorum's own trucks. For orders outside the Hampton Roads area, we will assess the best means to getting your purchase to you. Along with our own delivery services, we ship via FedEx, UPS and other common carriers.

Decorum is happy to provide financing for qualified buyers. Our “12 Months same as Cash” is our most popular financing option through Wells Fargo.

Decorum’s primary market is Hampton Roads, Virginia; it includes the seven cities of Newport News, Hampton, Norfolk, Virginia Beach, Chesapeake, Portsmouth and Suffolk. We also serve northeastern North Carolina including the resort communities of the Outer Banks.

We are the experts of special orders, as they constitute a significant portion of our annual sales. We view special orders as another service we provide to our customers, and they respond to that very positively.
